The Bible says nothing about the human spirit being immortal. In every instance of reference to the human spirit, it says that it is something IN us.
"...there is a spirit IN man..." (Job 32:8).
"...the spirit WITHIN me constraineth me." (Job 32:18)
"...renew a right spirit WITHIN ME." (Ps.51:10)
"...when my spirit was overwhelmed WITHIN me..." (Ps.142:3).
"...the Lord, which... formeth the spirit of man WITHIN him..." (Zech.12:1).
"...what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is IN HIM..." (I Cor.2:11).
"...the spirit that DWELLETH IN US lusteth to envy..." (James 4:5).
All the Bible says about it is that it is the human intellect... the "mind."
"...be renewed in the spirit of your MIND..." (Eph.4:23).
But, the Bible does say that at death... the spirit: "...shall return unto God who gave it." (Eccle.12:7)
The Bible says that we are unconscious at death (Eccle.9:5-10)... indicating that the spirit works in conjunction with the human brain.
So, if the spirit returns to God at death... it's apparent that it is preserved with Him in some way that He returns to whatever body we resurrect in for Judgment Day.
It is also evident that our spirit is what God saves in the Judgment.
"...deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that THE SPIRIT MAY BE SAVED in the Day of the Lord Jesus." (I Cor.5:5)
We don't know for sure. So far, no observation has been made of any spirit and there is no evidence for them either. Like all spiritual or religious ideas, it comes down to faith; if you believe we have spirits, then we do for you. If not then we don't.
