Humans have been eating Tilapia for at least 7000 years. The Egyptians farmed Tilapia at least 4000 years ago and Jesus passed out the very same Tilapia we eat today, caught in the Sea of Galilee (actually a fresh water lake), when he did his Sermon on the Mount. In fact, humans were still fishing mainly Tilapia from the Sea of Galilee until it was closed in 2009 for overfishing and low population fish counts.

In contemporary times, Tilapia is a major export fish with the largest exporter being China despite its many problems with raising Tilapia in highly polluted waters, their overuse (some scientists say "abuse") of antibiotics, as well as their practice of raising fish in excrement "fertilized" waters.

Tilapia is probably the most purchased fish in US markets and as prices for sea caught fish soar there seems to be no end to the increasing popularity of Tilapia as a worldwide, aquaculture product. In fact, according to INFOFISH 2010 "The US. was the single largest market for Tilapia globally. In the first 10 months of 2010, a 15% increase of Tilapia imports was recorded compared to the year before."

Indeed humans are eating Tilapia like never before.
