A bit of both actually.

We regulate rivers, we pollute, we build farms, villages and cities - which doesn't help the hippo.

But we also establish nature reserves and game parks, employ wildlife wardens and rangers - which does help the hippo.

Overall though the hippo would probably have done better if there weren't any humans at all.

While technically a vulnerable, not endangered, species, their preservation is dependent on a number of factors, such as improved economic conditions in the countries which they inhabit in an attempt to reduce the need to resort to hunting them for meat for food and ivory for money. Economic prosperity would in turn afford those countries a greater capacity to prevent rampant habitat destruction, which many now cannot do. In addition to this, contributing donations to worthy animal and habitat preservation charities (such as the WWF and others), funds can be collected to begin initiatives targeting specific habitats, species or populations of species that would otherwise go unaddressed and potentially destroyed/extinct.
