If the mare is infertile because of age, yes they will continue to go into estrus. The hormones still work, but no more eggs are being released.

If the mare has been spayed (which is very rare) and the ovaries are removed, the mare will no longer go into estrus.

Mares with normal estrus behavior will cycle the same way most of their lives. There are disease processes or reproductive anomalies that can develop that will cause a mare to stop cycling or change cycling behavior but the conditions are somewhat rare and can occur at any age.

Can a mare go into heat when near a stallion?

Mares are seasonally polyestrus. This means they cycle every 3-4 weeks throughout the spring and summer. Mares will often not exhibit signs of estrus (heat) unless they are near either a stallion or a strange horse they aren't yet familiar with.

Can a cow go into estrus even though she can't get bred?

Absolutely! Cystic cows can either never be in heat or be in heat all the time. A heifer that has an abnormal reproductive is still able to have regular, normal estrus cycles even if she cannot get bred. If she's in the wrong condition, like too fat or too thin for her to be able to settle when bred by a bull, she will still go into estrus regularly.

Can a mare who isn't in heat get pregnant?

yes they can, a mare, when introduced to a stud can, within minutes be in a standing heat. Answer2: Mares can only get pregnant while in heat (Estrus), however some may not show signs that they are in Estrus, leading owners to believe the mare is not receptive or able to become pregnant. If a mare does not become pregnant she will cycle again until either she becomes pregnant or the daylight hours shorten which helps to stop the heat cycle in horses. Ovulation in mares typically begins in March and ends in October, though it can go for longer or shorter depending on your location.

Do animals such as horses get a period like humans and if so do they actually bleed like can you see the blood coming out?

No. Horses, specifically mares, go into what is called estrus, which is a reproductive stage in which they are receptive to getting bred to a stallion. They do not bleed out nor shed the uterine lining like a female human does. They may bleed a little bit after estrus, but not so substantially nor noticeably like with women or female dogs.
