Well there are present day pirates, but instead of swords, they use machine guns. They are basically present day robbers of the sea. That's all.

They continue to exist and recently there were at least two incidents where ships were attached by pirates.

yep they do, in 2006 there was 61 reported cases of ships being attacked by pirates.... they are pretty much the same as pirates of the old days in the sence that they steal from other ships but instead of swords they have machine gun, they have no parrots and anything else you'd expect from pirates... they drug traffic steal from other ships, kill people and so on... oh and they're not accually known as pirates anymore tho, the name pirate is someone who steals oh the ocean but for some reason pirates now days dont use this title even tho... it is what they are

Unfortunately yes. Piracy is big business of the cost of Somalia for example. Pirates use captured boats with machine guns mounted and mobile phones. Today the Somalian pirates they have captured a French boat and are demanding one million dollars ransom for the release of the crew.
