If a girl is going to see me in just my underwear, then I chose briefs to show over my butt. If it is just me showing off to the guys, then boxers are more comfortable

As with all things, there are various reasons as to why one is a better choice over the other, particularly when it relates to comfort, body shape, sweat production that requires the highest amount of wicking, and last but not least, many types of underwear for men may need to be changed to a different type in order to promote the best possible option when the man and a female partner wish to conceive a child. Underwear types that constrict blood flow to the genitals; in cases such as these, it is often found that constricting underwear worn by men are also constricting the ability for healthy sperm to perform to the highest potential in order to fertilize a woman's egg during ovulation.
Again, if the question is posed with more information, even if the question is posed in the hypothetical, it will allow a more in depth response.

∙ 12y agothis is mainly down to every man's personal preference. Some prefer briefs as they are more comfortable to them, others prefer boxers as they provide more breathing and thus not as sweaty balls in hot weather.
Briefs can be more uncomfortable when sitting on your buttocks for several hours per day so most men that sit extended periods per day would tend to be better off wearing boxers.
I cannot comment on older men too much except I have seen a man with balls hanging below his knees (yep...). For saggy balls syndrome in older men it might be beneficial to wear briefs for added support as not to accidentally sit on them!
It is also known that men expereince erections during their REM sleep. Sometimes up to 5 erections per night.
Therefore I would recommend every man to sleep in boxers as not to hinder the blood flow in ones genitalia. Getting an accidental erection while wearing briefs is very uncomfortable so this happening every night without ones knowledge cannot be good for the penis. The penis erection during a man's sleep is to maintain the penis health by increasing blood circulation. Briefs will interfere and hinder this natural health maintenance performed by a man's body.
