Bamboo is 98% to 99% of the average wild Giant Panda's diet, they will eat other things when available, but bamboo is the major source of food. Bamboo isn't very nutritious and doesn't help them build up the reserves needed to hibernate. The Giant Panda needs to eat lots, and often, amounting to about 20 to 30 pounds of bamboo a day depending on activity, age and weather.

∙ 6y agoThey do not hibernate because they do not have enough fat reserves to hibernate for a long time. So they half to go to lower elevation areas so they just keep on with there normal diet.
Panda bears do not hibernate because they usually do not eat meat preferring to the glance on the back of there throat does not cause tiredness in any month of the year

Giant pandas actually do not hibernate like other bears. Their primary food source, bamboo, grows all year-round, so they do not need to hibernate.
