New Zealand has several species and subspecies of penguin. The following nest on the mainland (the two large islands: the North Island and the South Island) as well as on offshore islands:

  • Yellow-eyed penguin (Hoiho) Megadyptes antipodes
  • Fiordland crested penguin Eudyptes pachyrhynchus
  • Southern little blue penguin Eudyptula minor minor
  • Northern little blue penguin Eudyptula minor iredalei, E. minor variabilis
  • Chatham little blue penguin Eudyptula minorchathamensis
  • White-flippered penguin Eudyptula minor albosignata

and these nest only on offshore islands:

  • Eastern rockhopper penguin Eudyptes chrysocome filholi
  • Erect crested penguin Eudyptes sclateri
  • Snares crested penguin Eudyptes robustus
