The reaction to oxygen in the air causes pennies to rust.

Partial Correction"Rust" is the term for oxidation of a ferrous metal such as iron or steel. Except for 1943 US cents that really were made of steel, US cents have been made of copper, cupronickel, bronze, or copper-plated zinc, none of which is a ferrous metal. These metals do oxidize but it's not rust.
