The true answer for this is underneath the surface of things people date because they are looking for someone to spark them An there always looking for the person that gives what there lacking it's never to date just cause :)
While the above is theoretically true, you will eventually encounter people who seem to like the dating process, but have no interest in being in a "serious" relationship. Many of these people will be those who have no real interest in being in a relationship, but feel social pressure to date (usually from family members, but sometimes also from their peer group). Others will enjoy the exploratory (i.e. "getting to know you") phase of dating and the newness of a new person, but simply not interested in the long-term emotional entanglements that a relationship brings.
So, yes, there are in fact a substantial number of people who "date just to date". As with most things, people can go through phases in life, so a person may decide to change their outlook on dating at some time, but that's the unpredictable future.
