Yes, soft drinks are available in Japan, and some Japanese people do drink them.
Hot drinks are heated, usually over a gas or propane flame or with an electical heating element. With the exception of hard liquor, the main component of a drink is water. At sea level, pure water can be heated as high as 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius) before it boils. This is far too hot to drink, so drinks are served at substantially lower temperatures than this, though they can still be quite hot.
