Some French people may wear berets, (French spelling: béret) but not that much. They are still something common for men of a certain age in south-western France, just like other sorts of caps. Let's say 1% of Frenchmen could wear old-style caps, and maybe the beret type would be one tenth of these caps. And they can also be a fashionable accessory for women.
What is sure is that even the French press use the cliché of a beret-wearing man when they want to symbolyse the traditional Frenchman.
