The source of plastic in the sea is probably more a result of poor disposal of garbage from ships and coastal areas than of individuals. There are huge clumps of them in the oceans.
Pollution, Burning of trees, throwing plastic bags (non-biodegradable) into the sea/river/ocean
cleaning up the beaches, not throwing plastic bags in the ocean because turtles will mistake it for jellyfish which is what they eat.

Nothing is allowed to be thrown into the sea. Pollution is illegal. Exceptions made for clean water and some biodegradable substances. Plastic is a 'no no'.
Getting people to pay for carrier bags (which are usually made of lightweight plastic) is one of the ways being used to encourage people to bring their own bags and re-use them. Billions of plastic bags are thrown away every year. They take years to break down in landfill. They get washed out to sea where they kill sea creatures like turtles, which eat them thinking they are jellyfish.

No! There is nothing that can digest plastic. No animals of any kind, no birds, no fish, nothing. Plastic is one of the killers of birds and marine life, like turtles, which eat floating plastic bags because they look like jellyfish. Sea birds eat bits of plastic till their bellies are full, and then they die.
Yes, it is man made. A natural sponge is a sea creature that looked like what we call a sponge. Although still available, what most people call a sponge is man made of a soft plastic or foam like material.
A cleaning sponge (the rectangle-kind used in your kitchen) is usually made of man-made material like plastic or foam. However, some people use dead sea sponge bodies as cleaning sponges. People especially like to use them in the bath or shower.*SpongeBob is a kitchen sponge. That's supposed to be a joke, because he's a sponge from the sea, but they drew him like a kitchen sponge instead.
