One major invention that is still around today was radio. Another was talking pictures-- today known as movies (movies had been around since 1895, but they were silent until 1927, when technology to bring sound to movies was perfected). Early experiments with television were occurring in the 1920s, and TV is certainly still around today. Frozen food, band-aids, penicillin, bubble gum, and the yo-yo all go back to the 1920s, and all are still around today.

Silent movies, as they originally ran in theaters, had no sound at all. It was a given that the theater pianist (or organist, usually) would add sound by "playing along" with the film (a rare skill that has pretty much died out today). When you watch a silent movie now, and hear music, it was added to the soundtrack in the studio in part to mimic the experience of viewers during original theater runs. By the way, 'silent movies' were not called that when they were popular; they were called simply "movies" since they were the only kind of movie that anyone knew about until the 'talkies' came along and quickly made silent films obsolete.
Movies can have various effects in society. Today, many people use movies as a form of entertainment. Movies can be used as a form of mass communication. If popular movies portray something such as smoking or drinking as cool, this can have a negative affect on society by encouraging younger people to smoke or drink. Movies can have an influence on behavior and the way people think.
