No, but they will definitely be happier if they are. My adult rat was about two years old when we first got her a cage mate. She was more active and gentler than ever before. If you only have one rat and don't handle it often, it becomes antisocial and very aggressive. If you don't play with it very often, get it a cage mate.

A:Yes! Most good breeders will NOT sell you a single rat unless they know you and know you have other rats. Rats are extremely social creatures and they need companionship of their own species. They are under a lot of stress when there aren't any other rats around and single rats are more likely to become sick. If you have a single rat, you should be willing to put in a minimum of 4 hours per day with them. Rats are the third most intelligent animal after humans and Chimps (the only species other than those two to exhibit problem solving capabilities) and they get lonely and depressed.

A:

it really does not matter because it would be happier with a mate to play with but sometimes they could kill one another but it does not usally happen. It is entirely up to you because ethier way your rat will be just as happy as long as it is loved and well looked after.

A:

Yes, they get lonely even if you spend every minute with them. Rats are extremely social and they need other rats to keep as companions. Single rats can become sick.

I would, if i were you it's much more fun and they get lonely easily, my rats hate to be separated for more than 10 minutes, they go and sulk in the corner or run round in circles sniffing and making funny noises.
