Herons eat fish
To catch fish, and other small yummy (to herons) animals. I see Herons around my pond a lot. They will spear the fish with their sharp bill and then flip it up in the air and catch it in their mouth and begin swallowing similar to a snake swallowing. You can see the fish body shape going down their throat as their neck bulges out. Pretty weird but very interesting.
Herons eat fish, frogs, crayfish, water snakes, even insects.
Herons find their food by standing by the river and watching the fish and then they dip their head into the river and grab the fish before it gets away.
