A viola does not use the F (or bass) cleff. Instead it uses the C cleff which is rarely used. I myself am a violist and I have never seen any music or heard of any music using bass cleff for the viola.

The bass clef is known as the 'f' clef. Hence, the most noticeable feature of it is the two dots, and the note on the line between the two dots is an 'f'. From there, the space above is a 'g', the line above that is an 'a' and it keeps going up into the ledger lines with 'b', 'c', 'd', et cetera. It goes down from the 'f' in reverse order, so it is 'f', 'e', 'd', 'c', et. cetera.

Generally, the names for the lines of the bass clef are:

  • A-lways
  • F-udge
  • D-eserve
  • B-oys
  • G-ood

If you read it in reverse, you can remember the lines easily by the phrase 'good boys deserve fudge always'.

The names for the spaces of the bass clef are:

  • G-rass
  • E-at
  • C-ows
  • A-ll

If you read that in reverse, you can remember the spaces easily by the phrase 'all cows eat grass'.

See 'related links' for a picture of the notes on the clef.

Alto clef, otherwise called viola clef because they're the only ones in the symphony that play it, except for trombones occasionally. It looks like a backwards 3 on a note staff.

It can, yes, but the lower notes would use more ledger lines than is convenient to read.

How many viola players switch to the violin?

Generally, the switch happens in the opposite direction. Most schools begin teaching students violin in elementary school, and don't switch students to viola until later. "Harder" orchestra music calls for viola more often than other music, and in "easier" music 3rd violinists can cover the viola part. As a result, the only reasons a person would usually have for switching from viola to violin are a lack of teacher, lack of access to the instrument, or a return to violin after trying viola.

Does Viola and piano play the same melody?

They can, except for the few notes of the viola that are outside the low end of the violins range, and the few notes of the violin that are outside the high end of the violas range. Mostly, the violin and viola have a different tone quality. The violas tone is darker and warmer than the violins.
