Polar bears sleep wherever they are able to be out of the water. Caves; on the surface of the sea ice; on land; on a floating tree -- if:

a) the polar bear can manage to balance its sleeping body on the tree, and

b) there is actually a tree floating where the polar bear needs it.

Polar bears do not hibernate; it is a "dormant state" which is similar to hibernation, but not actually the continuous, deep sleep of real hibernation; it is the same as a human sleeping up to 20 hours each day.

In autumn ("fall"), pregnant female polar bears that are ready to give birth will dig a den out of the ice or snow, or the permafrost if it isn't cold enough for snow, on land. It is in the den that female polar bears go into the "dormant state".

Can polar bears sleep while afloat in the water?

No, there is no evidence that polar bears sleep in the water. A sea otter can sleep on water, floating on its back, but a polar bear's body density makes this impossible.
