Of course they did believed in life after death, and in the existence of good and bad spirits. There are many examples which proves this such as the existence of god and devil, many religions, stories, fables.

Yes, there has been belief about spirits further back than record. The strange thing is that is every form of human civilisations has some form of closely related idea on spirits. I am using this as one of the evidence for proving the supernatural because civilisations all around the world can't all just make up a single idea without communication with other civilisations which back then they wouldn't be talking to other civilisations. This means the spirits has been seen and a slightly different idea is caused by shock from seeing them. But, yes primitive people did belive in spirits (they were the first actually).

This is really a good way of proving a point. But you cant believe what you cant feel. What we feel is just the fear of the unknown, based on the fact that our ancestors has told to us. And about your reason I would like to say that different civilisations had different views regarding the existence, powers, properties of spirits based on there fascinations and fears. And if some had same views regarding these then I would say it is merely a coincidence.
