Yes, there has been belief about spirits further back than record. The strange thing is that is every form of human civilisations has some form of closely related idea on spirits. I am using this as one of the evidence for proving the supernatural because civilisations all around the world can't all just make up a single idea without communication with other civilisations which back then they wouldn't be talking to other civilisations.
