Rats make excellent pets. They live for about 3-5 years.
However, as they are intelligent they can easily get depressed if you do not stimulate their minds. They can live by themselves but prefer to live in groups as they are social animals.
If you live in a family environment, then an adult should be the main caretaker for the rat. If you have young children in your home, do not let them take the rat out of its cage without supervision. This is not so much for the child's safety but for the rat's. Older children (9+) should be allowed to care for the rat as this will teach them responsibility. Rats love to play games; males tend to be more like couch potatoes compared to females. The males also may urinate more often than the females. On the other hand, females are prone to tumors if they are not fixed.
I have five rats, and love them all. They are wonderful with my four children, and are great for conversation starters. People think we are weird, but we adore them. They often accompany us out for short runs about town and on family walks (they ride on our shoulders). Each rat has it's own personality and suits up well with our personalities.
