Cows won't eat manure even if it is on their grazing field. They might get some in their mouth if they didn't see it, but they won't go within a reaching distance of their own excrement.

What are the causes of cattle ranching?

There are many good and bad causes that people see associated with cattle ranching. Here's a lost of both: Good: - Healthy cattle (less sickness with extensive management and natural diet) - Healthy grass (good grazing practices induce vigorous grass growth) - Low labour costs (cattle are feeding themselves and not being fed) - Minimal manure management (Mother Nature takes care of that on the pastures) - Environmentally friendly, as manure and urine goes back into the soil to help plants grow, and grass makes cattle fat and happy - Range cattle produce beef that is healthy for people to eat, containing lower and healthier fat than feedlot grain-fed beef. Bad: - Overgrazing (always comes with poor grazing practices) - Deforestation (which is synonymous with what is happening in South America) - Requires fencing to keep animals in and to keep animals out of riparian areas - Higher methane production with cattle grazing on pasture versus being fed in a feedlot - Grass-fed beef can be something that people don't like, preferring grain-fed over grass-fed.

Why did sheep and cattle ranchers clash?

Sheep tend to eat the grass much closer to the ground than cattle do. As a result it takes the grazing pasture longer to recover. In the old days cattlemen thought the ground would never recover so they ran sheepherders off their grazing land.

What is the importance of fodder crops to livestock?

Fodder crops are incredibly important to livestock, especially cattle. Feeding cattle and grazing them ultimately depends on the production of forage crops because these animals will not nor can not eat anything else. Cattle are herbivores and designed to eat plants that are impossible for us humans to eat, so in order for us to get beef and milk from these animals, we had--and have--to feed them according to what they can, will, and need to eat. Thus, no matter how or what cattle are fed, they all source from fodder crops.

What does a cow do after grazing while resting?

Cattle eat for about 18hrs a day. So when they are not actively grazing they will lay down to chew their cud. Cud is the regurgitation of forage they have already eaten. Forages are very difficult to digest this is where the cattle's four compartment stomach comes into play. One part of the stomach does the initial digestion and then it is sent back to the mouth for more grinding and compaction.

Why did people believe sheep ruined the land for cattle?

Not if sheep are managed in a sustainable and responsible way on pasture. If sheep were allowed to overgraze a pasture or graze so much off a pasture that there's nothing left for the cattle to eat, most certainly they would ruin land intended or also used for grazing cattle.
