Yes, skunks do shed. They have a very dense undercoat covered with stronger, shiny "guard hairs", much like a husky or a malamute. Typically, toward the end of summer they"blow their coat", meaning that they shed all of their dense undercoat at once, leaving their overlying color coat intact. As winter approaches, they rapidly regrow a new, luxurious undercoat to protect them in the winter. We have a pet skunk named Ansel Adams who just lost his coat; it all fell out at once while I was brushing him. Now he looks so much thinner! His new coat is already growing in, getting him ready for the cold weather to come. The fact that he is a house skunk, and therefore not exposed to the elements, and the fact that the lights are on far past natural sunset does not seem to affect his shedding schedule.
