There are several things to use to protect your garden,the most common is buying snail pellets and spreading them around the area,these will kill snails/slugs....
You can also thinly place a 4 inch wide line of "rock salt" (used to melt ice on roads) all the way around the outside edge of your garden where the tilled dirt meets the grass....Its natural and safe...can also be placed on top of or in front of landscaping timbers,rock/wood garden borders,ect...do not spread it around the plants......just around the gardens border...
Snails and slugs will not cross over the rock salt they will avoid it because rock salt kills them by quickly drying out their body....
It has to be pure "rock salt" only,it can not have any additives such as calcium ect.....If "rock salt" is not available in your area because you get no snow fall or ice,then you can use whats called "solar salt" it can be found at most all hardware stores,it is used primarily for water softener systems...both are natural and safe.....
you have to maintian the 4 inch line of Rock salt/solar salt through the growing season,these salts last for a long time so it is not much work to keep,do not place your plants close to the salt line,at the end of the season simply rake up the remaining rock salt/solar salt and throw it away....
