YES, almost every large carrier would have at least one submarine as escort.
aircraft carriers & their escorts
Probably a WWII slang term. There were three categories (three sizes) of US carriers in the war: Fleet (CV); Light (CVL); and Escorts (CVE-also called Baby Flat-Tops/Jeep Carriers). The Pacific Theater (aka Pacific War) was fought by Fleet Carriers; but due to shortages, Light and Escort carriers also had to fight there. "IF" Fleet or Light carriers could be spared, they might do some duty in the Atlantic, where the only threat was a submarine. But there were plenty of "Baby Flattops" available, so many of those were dispatched to the Atlantic to hunt subs. The Fleet carrier USS Wasp did some duty in the Atlantic, but when other Pacific Fleet Carriers were sunk, the Wasp had to replace them in the Pacific...so she sailed there, but was sunk by a Japanese Submarine on 15 September 1942.
Owing to their absence during the attack, the Japanese failed to destroy the American aircraft carriers, which were a primary target. The Japanese attackers also neglected to attack the submarine pens, which would play a major role in the future US submarine campaign against the Japanese merchant fleet.
The convoy system...and later the CVE's (Carrier, Heavier than Air, Escort/Escort Aircraft Carriers; aka Jeep Carriers, Escort Carriers, or jokingly by the crewmen that manned them, "Combustible, Volatile, Explosive").

CV = Carrier Vessel. CV was originally used for normal large Carriers while CVL was used for Light Carriers that embarked a smaller Airwing than large Carriers and CVE was used for Escort Carriers which were to slow to keep up with the fleet and used for auxiliary duty like convoy escorts, air support and aircraft transport. Later after Nuclear power became common they added a new letter, N. N = Nuclear. CVN, Carrier Vessel Nuclear.
Airplanes found them and sunk them. Aircraft were launched from escort carriers. Destroyers and Destroyer Escorts sometimes get the glory for it, but seldom could anything (in WWII) escape from those flying machines!
Escort carriers (aka Jeep Carriers, Baby Flat-tops) carried the same type of aircraft as the light and fleet carriers did: Fighters (Wildcats & Hellcats); torpedo planes (Avengers); and dive bombers (Dauntless & Helldivers). Escorts simply carried about 30 airplanes compared to 50 plus planes for light carriers and 90 plus planes for fleet carriers. In the Atlantic, subs were the primary prey; and Escort Carriers (along with Escort Destroyers) spent their times hunting submarines. Escort Destroyers were smaller than regular US Navy destroyers, and also spent most of their duties in the Atlantic theater. In the Pacific, the large carriers and large destroyers took on the IJN. But USN destroyer escorts and escort carriers also fought in the Pacific, supplimenting USN firepower. For example: the destroyer ESCORT "Samual B. Roberts" was sunk while charging an IJN Cruiser at Leyte Gulf. The ESCORT Carrier "USS Bismarck Sea" was the last USN aircraft carrier sunk in WWII; during the Battle for Iwo Jima (where the US Marines raised the flag).
