"Comrade" is a form of address used in Russia as a generic term for people during the Soviet regime. It was used similarly to how one uses "Sir" or "Ma'am" to politely refer to strangers, as well as taking the place of "Mr." in many titles, such as "Comrade Chairman" vs "Mr. President." It's actually fallen out of style in Russia, lately, which kinda leaves a gap in the language as there isn't a readily available replacement for the word.
