Ants work together in a colony by each ant having their own job. There are ants that gather food, there are scout ants that find food for the other ants to gather. There are also warriors who attach other nests and defend their own nest and queen.
They don't 'gather' food (like a squirrel would gather nuts for example) - they hunt prey by using their tongue to sense what is around them.
I don't think they "gather" food, just chomps at what is there, and then eats most or all of it. They don't store food like a squirrel.
