Its probably due to the fact that the previous soul-dew was a Latios's soul [as it is said that Latios is a male,and from what I know,it said their father died to make the first soul-dew or something along that line.Added to the fact Latios may of been stronger,or older than Latias[as he is bigger],both of which could result in him being more protective of her[this is seen in the movie],and sacrificing himself to prevent her from sacrificing herself. It is also possible that as it was,most likely, a Latios whom made the first soul-dew that a soul-dew can only be made by a Latios,meaning even if latias could convince him to let her sacrifice her-self or over power him and do as he did,their is a high probability that it wouldn't work,so she couldn't save him even if she was capable of stopping him. The size differences may hint at Latios being older,their-fore it is logical to asume he wouldn't allow the intervention and was stronger than Latias.
