The 132 came with plastic or wood grips. Some of the plastic grips had Checkering, however I do not believe the wood grips ever had checkering.
Although often billed as ivory or bone, both sets are synthetic. Frisch verified that all of these grips were made by Maurice D. Scarlac of a material he developed called Catalin. Wayne reportedly liked them so much that he took them home and personally "tea-stained" them to a yellow color such as the patina often seen on ivory and bone grips.

Yes ======= As previously stated, Yes. It can. But it would probably hurt your hand quite a bit. There are usually mechanical functions happening under the grip. The hammer spring/strut assembly is usually there. That covers 99% of most revolvers/auto loaders. Glock and other polymer framed "striker fire" guns generally don't have this, but the grips are usually not removable anyways.
