They can make excellent pets - PROVIDED you do some research into the species ! That way, you know what to look out for in case it gets sick. Also - make sure you can provide a secure enclosure (inside AND outside your house) so that (a) other animals can't interfere with the tortoise and (b) tiny fingers can't get at the animal without supervision (accidents DO happen !)
