English specifically... I'm not sure. I do know that it's fairly common in China for a person to have two doctors, one who uses Western medicines and techniques and one who uses traditional Chinese medicines. In general, western medicine is used for the treatment of injuries and diseases and traditional medicines are used for health maintenance.

No because it follow 'evidence based practice' and currently there is not enough accurate information on most traditional medicines and their effectiveness. However, many traditional medicines have found their way into the modern formulary. Usually after a few tweaks and a price hike (not that the original 'traditional medicines' are much cheaper). There is some analysis of traditional medicine available from the Cochrane Review and also some shorter more informal reviews on Bandolier.
Sometimes medicines advertise that it lasts for 12 hours, and it really only works for an hour or two - why is this and can I do anything to make it work better? Other medicines say that you are only supposed to take them every 4-6 hours yet they only work for about an hour, if at all. How can I get medicine to work???
