A final examination, annual, exam, or final is a test given to students at the end of a course of study or training. Most high schools, colleges, and universities run final exams at the end of a particular academic term, typically a quarter or semester, or more traditionally at the end of a complete degree course.

I'm not sure what you mean specifically by "results". If you mean, "Do the universities already know what the final grades are?", then I can explain a little. Professors are sometimes required to report a mid-term grade to their Department Heads, so they have a general idea of the progress of each student. At the end of the term, though, everyone has to wait until the final exams are taken and scored and averaged before the final grade is recorded. They can look at a student's progress up to that point and assume that the student's effort on the exam will be consistent with the effort so far, but they don't KNOW until after the exam. Also, they can calculate the grade so far to see if there's any hope of the student's passing the course regardless of the exam grade. Sometimes, passing is impossible for a student by the end of the term. For example, if there is a policy about the number of absences automatically reducing the grade, and the student rarely goes to class, it may be impossible to bring up the score high enough to pass. Another example would be a student who misses tests and hasn't turned in assignments, especially major ones like essays, term papers, or presentations.
