Cheap Volkswagen Passats can be bought directly from the dealer as a used car, or find an older model that is reduced to be gotten rid of. Used car dealers often offer the same deals.
On the B-5 model passats, the battery is located at the rear of the engine compatment very close to the base of the windshield / windscreen.

Don't buy the extended warranty from them (Maxcare). I purchased a 2005 New VW Beetle, each time I needed a repair they either wanted to use re-manufactured parts that my dealership would not guarantee and I had to pay the difference of a new part that was very expensive.. What was the point of having an extended warranty? Otherwise the service at Carmax is fine.
Almost all Passats use a full synthetic 5w40 oil. Just to make sure, check the owners manual. If the car is older then 2005 and the manual says 5w30, then use the now recommended 5w40.
