So drinking the blood of a dead person is pointless - there is no life energy to be had. Unless of course there is an unrelated pleasure in drinking the blood. Some people eat when they are not hungry - and get fat. Some dogs kill small animals when they are not hungry simply for the pleasure. So I could see how a vampire might go on blood hunting trips simply for the fun of it. Something eating a dead body is a scavenger or a ghoul.
