They are very social, and are friendly, they will usually let you walk right up to them to a point, but if you feed them like I do, eventually they will come right to you.

I have suet feeders up at my home, and when I am refilling them the hairy woodpeckers will land right on the suet holders as I am carrying them out to place in the tree and begin eating.
