Depending on the variety of lobelia that you're growing -- there are about 90 varieties -- deadheading generally promotes a neater appearance, although it is not necessary.

Lobelia that you're growing in containers, or in your garden will grow in most any light condition, but prefer moist soil. If you apply fertilizer every month or so, your plants will flower from mid-summer until the first frost.

Is it necessary to dead head carnations?

Cut the spent flowers (deadhead) to keep the plant neat, promote growth (especially stem branching) and get a rebloom in the fall. Take care to nip off the spent flower, not the whole stem. If you look further along the stem, you will see tiny flower buds forming to take the place of the spent one, if given the chance. If a carnation goes to seed, it focuses its energy in developing the seeds instead of flowers. It is more efficient to multiply carnations asexually through cuttings or divisions, so there's no need to let the flowers go to seed.

Should lupine be dead-headed to promote new flowers?

Yes, lupine should be deadheaded to promote new flowers. The wildflower in question survives as a perennial whose life cycles and natural histories comprise several years. It will be more efficient in prioritizing life-sustaining functions and more impressive in blooms by being deadheaded once the floral display fades.

Should I deadhead spanish lavender?

I have a few small Spanish Lavender, I have been asking the same questions. From what I have read, if you deadhead them (only to the first few leaves) then it will encourage new growth and possibly a second flowering! I have just deadheaded mine, to get the extra growth and more flower!... basicly it's all about what you're after. I want a bushier plant so I have cut the heads back, I have left about 3 flowers and will cut them back once they have finished flowering! Good luck Dave

In my opinion, the cost of flowers is going to be more dependent on what type of flower you are buying and how far the flowers must be transported rather than on what the flowers will be used for.

Will the shasta daisy re-bloom or is it just once a season?

Shasta daisies will rebloom several times a year if you deadhead (remove old flowers) correctly. I cut the stem above the node closest to the flower before the flower is spent and has a chance to seed; the node will produce new stems that will produce blooms. If you remove those flowers before they go to seed, the daisy will produce even more stems - and it will continue to do so until you allow the plant to go to seed.
