This shouldn't usually happen but people can choke/suffocate/drown if whatever they are consuming has not been swallowed properly. When we swallow, a flap of cartilage covering the larynx called the epiglottis closes the entrance to the lungs, ensuring whatever it is we are swallowing only goes to the stomach.
