In principle, yes...

There's a UK qualification called the Higher National Diploma (2 years) - typically awarded in areas like sciences, engineering, business, accountancy, management etc - and many universities accept this as the first half of a matching degree course. So, many people do an HND & then later (maybe after working for a few years) go on to take a bachelor's degree after another 1-2 years of study.

There are also "Foundation Degrees", usually offered in areas like education, health care, performing arts etc.. Like the HND these are qualifications in their own right (eg for teacher assistants in primary schools; health care workers in care homes etc), but most can be upgraded to full degrees with extra study.

An American Associate Degree will sometimes be accepted by some British universities (depending very much on the universities & courses applied for) for direct admission to the second year of bachelor degree courses.

Yes, there are many individuals who start at a community college and then transfer later to a four year college or university to pursue a bachelor's degree. Read the below as to why some students prefer to start at a community college first.

  • Community colleges are less expensive to start out with. You can cut the cost of a four year degree almost in half by starting at a community college first, and then transferring to four year college or university to finish up the last two years.
  • There are typically smaller classroom sizes at the community college with a better professor to student ratio, which means more individualized attention.
  • Some students do not meet the entrance requirements of the four year college or university, thus they start at the community college first, then transfer later.
  • The community colleges are typically more family oriented, with a strong sense of community.
  • Some students like to be close to home, thus they start at their home county community college.
  • Some careers only require an associate's degree.

What is a AASCJ?

AASCJ stands for, Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice. However, if you plan on transferring to a four year college or university for a bachelors degree after completion of this program , check with the transfer counselor at the college you are enrolled in. Typically, the associates of applied science does not transfer well, unless the college has a special articulation with a four year institution. In most cases, those who plan to transfer for their bachelors degree, take criminal justice as an associate of arts degree.

If you are in a transfer program at the associates level, and transfer to a four year college or university within the same field, your credits should be awarded toward your bachelors degree.
