In the US, you do not have to answer any questions that are asked of you by a policeman whether you have been arrested or not. You can be required to provide ID, depending on circumstance and state law. Your ID is not generally protected.
Be polite, cooperate with their requests (to the extent that does not incriminate you), but you do not have to say or do anything that might be used against you later, and you have a right simply to remain silent.
