Yes you do. If you beat Red you can go to Silph Co. (Saffron City, the huge building) and talk to Stephen and you can choose from torchic, treeko, or mudkip. If you talk to Professor Oak in Pallet Town you can choose from charmander, bulbasaur, or squirtle. Hope this helped!
