You can buy one expansion and play the game according to that expansion but if you want to start into different other parts that the next expansion has you need to go buy the next expansion. You don't need all 3 expansions to play the game but it's better if you have them all.

∙ 12y agoYes. You must buy the World of Warcraft client for $20 and it includes the game and one free month of game time. This will get you to level 70 and Outlands. After that first month, you then are required to pay $15 monthly.
If you wish to access Wrath of the Lich King content (level 80, Northrend, Death Knights) you will have to purchase the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack. Same goes for the Cataclysm (level 85), and Mists of Pandaria (level 90, Pandaria, Monks) expansion packs.
You cannot skip an expansion, they must be purchased in order.
