No but it is a good idea to at least go to a trade school. Most jr colleges offer mechanics courses, in gas or diesel. Vehicles today are very high tech and on the job training is quite rare now. Besides, you would not like the pay if there was.

∙ 15y agoYou don't have to have a college degree to be a mechanic. But to get any good work like at a car dealership or a mechanic shop, most will require that you get your certification A.S.E. or more specified like Ford Master Tech, or GM Certified Mechanic. So in short, yes you will need some training and or certification to get a good mechanic job.
