In order to work in a formal capacity as an interior designer a college degree is needed. This, however does not mean that one cannot work in this field, just not as a designer.
The degree required to be an interior designer may vary. Available information claims an individual must have a combined total of six years of education or work experience. This can be an associates degree and four years of work, or a bachelors degree and two years of work under an interior designer.
However, you can call yourself a Design Consultant, Interior Decorator or just plain Designer without having any degree or certification. You just don't have the clout that comes with it. If you aren't an actual Interior Designer and you call yourself that, especially in print (ads, business cards, etc.) you can get sued and will never be allowed to become an interior designer.
While some certifications for interior design require a 4-year degree, many can be acquired with very little effort at all. As in everything, researching the qualifications of your designer will go far in finding the right person for you.
