In order to play World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, you have to have all of the expansions before it. After all, if you look at it this way. Lich king is only an addition to the main game. That's like trying to update software on your computer that doesn't exist :)
nope you need to buy burning crusade first then wrath of the lich king
Yes, but only if you pay to upgrade from vanilla to burning crusade and then to wrath of the lich king.
Burning Crusade (and Wrath of the Lich King) is an expansion pack to World of Warcraft. When you upgrade to Burning Crusade/Wrath of the Lich King, you are actually upgrading your account, not the software. The client is automatically updated when expansions come out.

You cant play Wrath of the Lich King without the Burning Crusade. The only way to play blood elf or dranei is to buy Burning Crusade. You also wouldn't really be able to level your character from 60-70 without the leveling areas in the Burning Crusade.
The Burning Crusade has been out quite a while. The new expansion is Wrath of the Lich King and is out on November 13, 2008
