no, as long as the grills clear the house and the unit is well supported you can put a 'window a/c thru the wall. it is better to use a metal case designed to slide the unit in. if you buy a unit sold as athru the wall it will cost twice as much. some units are sold to mount either way and have direction to do so.
You can move your window air conditioner anywhere you want to put it as long as it sits in the window.
Window air conditioner units are cheap to put in but not so efficient. There are some very good Energy Star efficient window air conditioners but they cost more to install.
I suggest that you put your air conditioner on low or use the fan on the air conditioner because it uses less energy. Another thing you could do is take a regular fan and put in the window to get air flow.
You would put it in like you are going to install an vertical conditioner only, you put it in the opposite direction.
There is no such product as an air conditioner window. However, you can buy a used window air conditioner on eBay or Craigslist. You can also check the classifieds in the local newspaper.

A window air conditioner must be fitted in the window. The back end generates hot air and some drip water. Some can fit in a wall but still the back half is outside.
