You need to be more specific.. what car.. model and year?
Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine block. Then remove the housing to access the thermostat. You may have to remove the fan housing to gain enough access to the therm housing. Make certain to get the right temp thermostat(185) and install exactly as removed. Use a good gasket sealer. It's a PITA. (PAIN IN THE ASS!) You have to remove the upper alternator bolt to slide the alt to the left. Depending on the location and style of clamp used ,you may have to remove the air compressor. ONLY REMOVE THE FOUR BLOTS OF THE COMPRESSOR AND NOT THE LINES. Remove the 2 bolts for the thermostat. It is a good idea to relace the little bypass hose while you are replacing the thermostat. You will need to reomve the compressor/alt bracket to do this . If you have gotten this far it is well worth it. A good DYI'er can do this job in approx 1-1 1/2hrs. Better than a few hundred at dealer.
disconnect neg bat terminal , remove belt , remove cables from alt. , remove bolts holding alt.
the thermostat on a lhs 3.5 is under the alternator in the bottom radiator hose fitting. it is pretty easy from the top. remove upper rad sup./remove alt./ disc. bot. rad hose/ect.. always drain goolant / pet cock pass-side of rad.
its next to the Alt. It's in a tight spot. I removed the Alt then you have all kinds of room.
Remove the water supply hose from your 1987 Chevy Astro thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. Remove the old thermostat and drive in the new thermostat.
Drain the water from the cooling system. Remove the water supply line to the thermostat. Remove the thermostat housing bolts. Remove the thermostat. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.
first remove the negative terminal of the battery,unplug the smart charge plug from the alt,remove the main power cable from alt,remove the o/s headlamp remove the expansion bottle pipe and move out of the way.use a 13mm spanner on the tensioner push down to release tension on alt belt take note of routing of belt and remove belt,next use a 17mm socket to remove the lower rear alt bolt,remove the top idler,remove the top alt bolt,loosen the lower idler supporting the alt you should now be ready to take the alt out,

First, remove the thermostat housing. Then grab the thermostat by hand and remove it.

Remove thermostat housing, remove old thermostat, clean surfaces, install new gasket and thermostat.
