No, you don't have to. But I play guitar and I would recommend using a guitar pick. If you don't then your fingers will get sore from blisters. Its not fun. So even though you don't HAVE to use one... USE ONE!!!

a pick or a 'plecktrum' (or pleq)- same thing..say pick or pleq though! you can also use your fingers (especially for acoustic guitar and finger picking elec - Mark Knoplfer never used a pick w/ his elec guitar!)
