If one is going to be hunting anything in a wooded area, such as deer or wild turkey, they should wear blaze orange hunting clothes. This allows the other hunters in the area to notice who is human and what is animal.
There are 9 states that do NOT legally require big game hunters to wear Blaze Orange during gun season. California is one of the 9, and does NOT appear to require it AT THIS TIME.
I would urge you to (1) research the California game regulations for yourself- they change without notice, and (2) FORGET THE REGULATION. PUT THE VEST ON. You may be legal without it- but you may be legally dead. Hunters get shot every year by other hunters. Deer do not see color- they DO see movement. I wear blaze orange and get deer each season- as do my brothers, cousins, and fellow hunters.
Turkey hunters have a valid complaint- turkeys DO seem to see color- Many states have a reasonable alternative- that is displaying a 12" x 12" section of blaze orange within arms reach of your turkey hunting stand.
Frankly, if I am going Into the Woods during hunting season, I wear orange, whether I am hunting or not.

When the deer firearms season begin, all hunters must wear 'Blaze or Hunter Orange' no matter what they are hunting. To meet the requirements a hunter must have exposed at all times at least 1 of the following: hat, jacket, gloves or vest. Camouflage orange does not satisfy this requirement. Rabbit and squirrel hunters must wear the required garments throughout the remainder of the season. Archery deer hunters may wear regular camouflage after all deer firearms seasons close. Grouse, pheasant and quail hunters must always wear orange. Goose and duck hunters are not required to wear orange. This law was in effect for 2009, so check again in 2010. Turkey, fox, coyote, raccoon, and o'ppossum hunters are not required to wear orange.
Wear a bright orange shirt. And that's all. Wear camouflage pants & shirt, with an orange vest & a camo hat. What I prefer to wear is a blaze hat, camo shirt and pants, boots, and a tactical vest. I like the vest because it holds things more securely than a backpack. When it's cold out coveralls are good.
During the firearm deer season in Georgia, all deer, bear and feral hog hunters (as well as those accompanying them) must wear at least 500 square inches of Hunter (Blaze) Orange on outer garments, above the waist.
Dont Shoot people, wear orange if gun season, keep weapon on safety till something is spotted, clearly identify your target, dont be stupid...
Camoflauge with an orange stripe.
