St Maarten/St Martin is part of the Netherlands Antilles, not a US territory. So, yes you will need a passport and obtain a visa while you stay there.
If you are a foreigner then Yes, it is safer and best to travel with your passport. You may also need a Visa if you are not a citizen or depending on where you are from.
If you're a US Citizen, you don't need a passport for USVI (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) or for Puerto Rico. They are US Commonwealths and Territories. Other Caribbean countries may have special agreements with the US, though.
= Do you need a visa for St Lucia on an Australian official passport? =
nope
Yes, a passport is required for entry into St. Lucia.
NO St. Lucian citizens do not need a visa to visit England But you do need one to visit other European countries under the Schengen treaty. I learned this the hard way after spending $2500 to go to Italy and only made it thorugh the gates and was sent back. If you live in the US become a citizen and get rid of your st lucian passport
Passport to Europe - 2004 St- Moritz was released on: USA: 11 April 2005
If you are a legal permanent resident of the US ("greencard holder") and wish to travel to Puerto Rico, you must carry the greencard in order to board the return flight from PR to the mainland US. A passport is not necessary. A greencard is not required to enter PR, but is required to return to the mainland US. Immigration officials check for the greencard before you are allowed on the plane for the return flight. There is no need to carry a passport. Some people suggest that a driver's license is all that you need - not true for permanent residents. Take your greencard!
