Almost all of HP and Canon's laserjet toner cartridges are made up of a toner half and a drum half that are connected by either 2 pins or a end cap with screws. But if you are referring to a cartridge that uses separate toner and drum units that need to be combined in order to work in your printer, there are several printer manufacturers that have those style of printers. Brother printers are famous for this, as well as many Xerox, Sharp and few others.

For example, the Brother HL series printers all use both a TN series cartridge and a DR series cartridge. These need to be connected together first, then they can be inserted into the printer to be used as a single cartridge.

With the Xerox X series and the Sharp AL series it is slightly different step to combine the two separate units. In these style of printers the drum unit is normally inserted into the printer first then the toner unit is combined with the drum by sliding it into the printer on top of the drum unit till it locks in place.

It all depends on what type you have. It would be very expensive not to know.

"Generally" they are two pieces. But there are quite a few that are combined and have to be replaced together. You would have to look in your manual or the devices web site to know for sure.

If it shows as separate then NO you don't need them both.

On the separate drum and toner set-ups, drum housings usually have around a 10,000 page to 20,000 page life span. Where as the toner cartridges usually have a 1,000 page to 2,500 page life depending on the capacity.

Why is the drum cartridge better than toner cartridge?

A Toner Cartridge holds toner and dispenses it as needed to make copies (in a copier) or to print pages (in a printer). Another element in xerographic copiers is the photoreceptor drum. This is the surface to which the toner adheres before being transfered to the paper. The photoreceptor has a long but finite useful lifetime and must be replaced occasionally. Some copiers/printers have drum cartridges which can be changed out by the user. The alternative would be to have a service person open the machine and replace the photoreceptor drum. So, a drum cartridge alows the user to replace the photoreceptor drum and a toner cartridge allows the user to replenish toner supplies, both easier than before cartridges were developed for this purpose.

Does laser printer need ink cartridge?

Laser printers do not use ink, instead static electricity is used to attract ultra-fine powdered plastic "toner" to a special drum and subsequently to the paper where it is heat fused, making the image that is printed. It uses a Toner Cartridge

Using a Toner Printer Cartridge?

Do you need to buy a new toner printer cartridge? You may not know this, but some people shake their toner cartridges to get more use out of them. The act of shaking a cartridge with ink in it can cause the ink clinging to the sides to fall to the bottom. Be careful about making sure ink is not going to come out of the cartridge while shaking it.

Why you have to change the toner cartridge?

You don't have to change the toner cartridge ever, as long as you don't plan on printing with it anymore. But if you want to continue to print legible papers then the toner cartridge will need to be changed when it reaches a point where you notice that it is skipping all or parts of words, becoming lighter or just losing overall print quality. If the cartridge is relatively new and you start to see some of these issues then it may be defective but if you want know how to handle that, then you will need to ask that question later. Otherwise you will need to just need to decide on the best and most practical way to go about buying a new cartridge, also subject for another question. Hope this helps.

How should a technician dispose of an empty inkjet printer cartridge?

Most laser toner cartridges have a built in handle or some kind of grip indention on the toner half of the cartridge. Regardless of how or where you do grab it, the most important this to remember is what not to do. If you have a laser toner cartridge that has a shutter, just about any toner cartridge from HP or Canon, then that immediately tells you that the shutter is protecting something that should not only never be touched but also not exposed to bright light. The reason behind this is that the shutter either covers a light sensitive drum or a Developer Roller. The light sensitive drum, if exposed to light for any length of time, can develop print quality issues and may develop print defects. The drum is also susceptible to the oils on your fingers, which can also cause print defects and quality issues. If it is covering a Developer Roller then not only can oils from your finger cause issues but if any hair, dust or dirt in there or if becomes scratched it can also cause issues.
