no they are two completely different games just made by the same software company. They have similar customization editors but different genres

There is no such thing as multiplayer in Spore. It's been referred to as a "Massively Singleplayer Online Game", because you can download others' creations right from the game, and achievements are saved online. Its spinoff, Darkspore is predominantly multiplayer co-op, though.
